Celebration of 77th Independence Day of India

1. The Consulate General of India in Cape Town celebrated the 77th Independence Day of India on 15 August, 2023 at the India House with patriotic fervor and exuberance.  The celebration was organized as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), an initiative of the Government of India, which started in 2021 and culminating in 2023 , to celebrate 75 years of progressive India and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements. 

2.      The celebrations  commenced with the unfurling of the National Flag by Shri P.K.Ashok Babu, Consul General of India followed by singing of National Anthem by members of Indian community, diaspora and friends of India. He also read out the Hon’ble President of India’s Address to the Nation on the occasion.  The Hon‘ble President of India, in her address, touched upon various topics including India’s developmental journey since independence, contributions and sacrifices of women in the freedom struggle, India’s role in promoting developmental and humanitarian goals around the world, assumption of leadership at various international fora, including G20, etc.  Following the formal part of the programme, Consul General Shri Ashok Babu interacted with the members of the Indian community and diaspora over light Indian refreshments.
